How Light and Shadow Create Atmosphere

I’ve always believed good lighting is about more than simply making a room brighter. It’s about creating atmosphere, adding depth and making a space feel good to be in.

One of the things I love about lighting design is the way shadows can transform an interior. When everything is evenly lit, a room can feel a little flat. Introduce some contrast between light and shadow, and suddenly you have depth, texture and interest.

Let the Shadows Do Their Thing

Rather than relying entirely on ceiling lights, try combining pendant lights, table lamps and floor lamps at different heights. A table lamp casting light across a wall, or a pendant creating a pool of light over a dining table, can make a space feel warmer and more intimate.

Natural wood, textured walls and sculptural furniture look particularly good when light falls across them, highlighting their shape and creating interesting shadows.

“For a relaxed dining space, try a pendant over the table and a softly lit lamp nearby. Keep the surrounding light lower so the table becomes the focus.”

My advice? Don't feel you need to light every corner of a room. Let some areas remain darker. Often, that's what makes the illuminated areas feel so inviting.

For me, great lighting is about finding the right balance between light and shadow. It's not just about what you see, but the atmosphere you create.
